"Peace"
is the name of a famous variety of rose, the ultimate accomplishment
of Francis Meilland, a French rose breeder.
The story
of this rose lies in the annals of World War II. Just before
the Germans conquered France, a piece of budwood from "Peace"
was spirited onto the last plane leaving France before its
occupation. A living emblem of hope, the Peace rose was adopted
in 1946 as the floral symbol of the United Nations. Since
then, it has become a lasting symbol of peace in gardens all
over the world.
