The hyacinth was named after a young man of Greek myth named Hyacinthus, who was loved but accidentally killed by the god Apollo. The grieving Apollo caused the beautiful flower to grow from the blood of the slain youth.

In the days of the Roman Empire, the hyacinth was transformed into a Christian symbol of hope - the hope that had been born of the blood of Christ
