A house
filled with riches
Cannot be defended.
Lao Tsu, The Tao Te Ching
Do
not store up for yourselves treasures on earth.
From Matthew, Chapter 6
In the
17th century, Holland was rocked by a collision between the
worlds of botany and finance. A new species of bulb from Turkey,
the tulip, captured the public imagination and took the Dutch
financial markets by storm. The varieties of tulip with feathered
patterns were especially coveted, and wild speculation ensued,
as volatile as any in the technology market today. The fall
of the tulip market was every bit as dramatic. Despite the
best efforts of the Dutch government to stabilize the inflated
bulb prices, the entire Dutch economy sank into a prolonged
depression that lasted for years.
I like
the philosophical spirit of the ladybug. It walks along the
tulip, oblivious to its falsely inflated worth.
