A butterfly cannot fly until its body has been warmed to a certain temperature. On a cold day one may see a butterfly in the garden, resting with its wings spread, waiting for the mist to burn away and the sun to warm its wings so it may fly.

So too may we be living, but stillborn of spirit. Like butterflies we may be outwardly beautiful, but we are not moved to action until our souls have been penetrated by the rays of the Holy Spirit. We need the Light to warm us before we can fly

The bee is among the garden’s hardest workers. Its most obvious product is its honey. Yet the bee plays a much more essential part in our lives: many of our crops would not bear fruit, were it not for the bee’s work as a pollinator. In Christian tradition, the bee is a symbol of industriousness, the epitome of the tireless laborer.
Each of us has our work in the world. Doing the work for which we are intended brings us money, health, a happy family life, or social standing; but most importantly, it brings us the happiness that comes with finding our place in Creation. Work is food for the spirit. The soul cannot be truly healthy without it.

Work is love made visible.

The heavens declare the glory of God,
The skies proclaim the work of His hands.

Psalm 19:1

Many people instinctively respond to the beauty of the natural world. For them, there is evidence of God in every scene of nature’s magnificence, and Creation itself becomes the irrefutable proof of His existence. A butterfly bears the blue of Heaven, and flowers, like vessels of glory, are filled with the undimmed light of Creation.

The author of Psalm 19 was surely such a person. He sings of the beauty of God’s Creation, conveying his joy with a conviction that rings true through the millennia.

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

Matthew 5:8

Many varieties of white rose begin with colored buds of pink or gold. These gradually turn white as the flower comes into full bloom.

The blossoming of the soul begins amid impurities, “colored” by addictions, fears, prejudices. It is our purpose, our journey in life to rid ourselves of these encumbrances. Only when we have freed ourselves of impurities – “the beam in our eye” – can we see clearly God’s purpose for us, the next step in our path.

As the obstructions drop away, one by one, we may become like a clear glass, through which the light of the Lord shines unobstructed.

You will protect me from trouble
And surround me with songs of deliverance.

from Psalm 32

To us, the ladybug is a pretty red beetle, a grace note in the garden. But to the rose, the diminutive ladybug is her knight and protector, ridding the garden of all manner of pests that would otherwise devour her leaves and blooms.

God is the ultimate Protector. He shares with us the miracle of life. He provides us with defenses against the ravages of the physical world. And He protects our souls for all eternity.
