Canton Theater
Acrylic on canvas, 16” x 20”
Private collection, Dr. and Mrs. Mike Anderson
“All the world’s a stage,
and all the men and women merely players.”
– William Shakespeare, As You Like It
Watching theater is a safe way of dipping your toe into an alternate universe. Often you are transported into emotions from despair, or surprise, or anger, or joy – all in the space of a couple of hours.
To convey this feeling of otherworldliness, I have painted the Canton Theater in the heightened setting of a sunset sky, the building itself topped by a cloud towering skyward. The curve of the earth, too, I have exaggerated, drawing the viewer more rapidly into the world of the Theater, so that finally we ourselves – the viewers – become players on the stage of the painting, walking into the theater, to take in a performance on a summer’s night.
Lights and shadows:
the highs and lows of Canton’s leading lady.
